Small-Time Local Controllability and Stabilizability of Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics under CMG Actuation

چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the presence of singular CMG configurations poses an obstruction to the small-time local controllability (STLC) and stabilizability of the attitude dynamics of a spacecraft actuated by single-gimbal CMGs. We identify a class of singular CMG configurations called critically singular configurations, at which the linearized dynamics fail to be controllable. Linear controllability, and hence STLC and stabilizability, hold at equilibria in which the CMG array is in a nonsingular or singular, but not critically singular, configuration. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions on critically singular configurations for STLC to hold. In particular, we show that STLC and stabilizability fail to hold at an equilibrium if the magnitude of the total angular momentum of the CMG array has a local maximum at the equilibrium.

Small Time Local Controllability and Stabilizability of Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics using Control Moment Gyroscopes
Momentum exchange devices such as reaction wheels and control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) form an important class of torque actuators for spacecraft attitude control. A single gimbal CMG comprises of a rapidly spinning rotor mounted on a gimbal. The orientation of the rotor can be changed by applying torque to the gimbal, and the reaction torque thus generated serves to control the spacecraft atti...
متن کاملDynamics and Control of a Rigid Spacecraft with a Control Moment Gyroscope
The attitude dynamics of a spacecraft with a variable speed control moment gyroscope (CMG), in the presence of conservative external inputs, are derived using variational principles. A complete dynamics model, that relaxes some of the assumptions made in prior literature on control moment gyroscopes, is obtained. These dynamics equations show the complex nonlinear coupling between the internal ...
متن کاملPeriodic H2 synthesis for spacecraft attitude control with magnetorquers and reaction wheels
Particularly attractive for small satellites, the use of magnetic torquers for attitude control is still a difficult problem. Indeed, equations are naturally time-varying and suffers from controllability issues. In this paper, a generic model, taking different kinds of pointing and different kinds of actuators into account, is proposed, linearized and then discretized. Recent studies demonstrat...
متن کاملQuaternion-based Finite-time Sliding Mode Controller Design for Attitude Tracking of a Rigid Spacecraft during High-thrust Orbital Maneuver in the Presence of Disturbance Torques
In this paper, a quaternion-based finite-time sliding mode attitude controller is designed for a spacecraft performing high-thrust orbital maneuvers, with cold gas thrusters as its actuators. The proposed controller results are compared with those of a quaternion feedback controller developed for the linearized spacecraft dynamics, in terms of settling time, steady-state error, number of thrust...
متن کاملRobust Attitude Control of Spacecraft Simulator with External Disturbances
The spacecraft simulator robust control through H∞-based linear matrix inequality (LMI) and robust adaptive method is implemented. The spacecraft attitude control subsystem simulator consists of a platform, an air-bearing and a set of four reaction wheels. This set up provides a free real-time three degree of freedom rotation. Spacecraft simulators are applied in upgrading and checking the c...
